Weathervane reading at Broadway Book Club - A Celebration of the work of Nigel Pickard

Following the unbelievable loss of Nigel Pickard, an incredibly talented writer and a truly wonderful friend, this reading event with Broadway Cinema book club was centred around Nigel's astounding poetry and prose.  With Ian Collinson and Rosie Garner, we did our best, but of course we could never do him justice.

31st October 2011 - Ghost Stories for Halloween

Nottingham Writers Studio and Mayhem presented a Halloween treat for
all fans of supernatural storytelling. Leading horror author Niki Valentine
hosted an evening of haunting tales and live readings as well as a series
of screenings of cult television ghost stories including Tom Baker reading
The Emissary by Ray Bradbury from Late Night Stories; The Mezzotint
read by Robert Powell from Classic Ghost Stories by M.R.James, and
from Christopher Lee’s Ghost Stories for Christmas, the good man
himself reading The Ash Tree.

26th June 2010 Lowdham Book Festival

I read from The Dawning at this year's fabulous festival, once more with fellow Weathervane author, the brilliant Nigel Pickard. Mr Weathervane himself, Ian Collinson, was also there to chat about independent publishing.

Muse 7, a selection of creative writing from Manchester Metropolitan University, was launched on 22nd June. This year's anthology includes my short story, The Insect Room

'The Dawning' Pre-launch Reading, 3rd December 2009

Alongside Steven Wilcoxson, who was promoting his debut 'Make Less Strangers', I read an extract from 'The Dawning' to the wonderful, supportive folk at Nottingham Writers' Studio at the NWS Christmas party.

Judging Fosseway Writers' Short Story Competition, November 5th 2009

The lovely people of Fosseway Writers group invited me to judge their annual short story competition (this years theme was horror). It was tough making the final selection, but I had a great time reading the entries and visiting the group on November 5th to announce the winners.

Circus Reading! 3rd October 2009

I was invited to read alongside fabulous Nicola Monaghan (author of 'The Killing Jar' and 'Starfishing') as part of Nottingham's LeftLion Circus Extravaganza - a day-into-night celebration of local music, art and spoken word. I read two passages from my second novel 'The Dawning' in the gallery above the Hand and Heart. A true privilege (and loads of fun).

Manchester Metropolitan University Creative Writing MA Results, June 2009

I was thrilled to be awarded an MA with Distinction in Creative Writing and MMU's Janet Beer Prize 'for outstanding contribution to the life of the Writing School'. During this course, I had completed my second novel, 'The Dawning'.

'There's No Place Like Home' - Workshop at Lowdham, 27th June 2009

I ran a practical creative writing workshop at this year's Lowdham Book Festival, transforming childhood memories of real places into fictional settings.

Independent' Reading Event - 18th March 2009

After 'How We Were Lost' was selected as one of the first titles to be promoted by the new Arts Council funded 'Exclusively Independent' initiative in December, the wonderful Legend Press invited me to take part in their first ever reading event at Hammersmith Library.'Word of Mouth' -

4th March 2009

I read my short story 'On the Island' as part of Nottingham Writers' Studio regular Reading Event at Nottingham’s Royal Centre.
The evening also included writing by Nigel Smith, Wayne Burrows, Richard Pilgrim, Ian Douglas and Michael Eaton.

December 2008 'Exclusively Independent'

Judges have chosen 'How We Were Lost' as one of the first titles to be featured in the new Exclusively Independent scheme.

'Exclusively Independent' is an Arts Council funded initiative aiming to bring independent publishers and bookshops together. Each of the selected novels will be freshly promoted across a range of independent bookshops, beginning initially in London.

3rd December 2008 - 'Word of Mouth'

I read my short story 'The Insect Room' at Nottingham Writers Studio's 'Word of Mouth' event at Nottingham's Royal Centre, on the 3rd December.
The evening also included work by Matt Hurst, Ian Charles Douglas, Roberta Dewa, Nigel Smith and David Sandhu.

October 2008 - Mslexia Review

How We Were Lost was featured as part of their Independent Press review, which focused on Flame Books, 'A dark, compelling novel . . . The language is seductive'.  Thank you Mslexia! 

I talked to Nottingham's Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem's resident reading group (the best book group in the world) about 'How We Were Lost'.

I'm lucky enough to be guest writer on John Holding's great, new fictionfest website, for July, featuring my short story'On the Island'.

May 2008 - 'Word of Mouth'

My short story 'School Run' was included in Nottingham Writers Studio's first 'Word of Mouth' reading event to take place at the Len Maynard suite at Nottingham's Royal Centre, where it was read by actress Emma Carlton.
